John 6, 52-59

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6, 52-59

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying,
“How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?”
Jesus said to them,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood,
you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood
has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day.
For my Flesh is true food,
and my Blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood
remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me
and I have life because of the Father,
so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven.
Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died,
whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

The Eucharist

1. Life. The purpose of the spiritual life to which we are called is to live fully, not to limit us. That’s why it becomes challenging if religion and spirituality are reduced to a simple checklist of morals or rituals. Real spiritual life means being able to listen to the Holy Spirit and understand what God desires and asks of you. If your faith becomes only about following rituals or rules, it can turn rigid and resemble a routine “check-in” rather than a living relationship with God.

2. Eat. Our relationship with Jesus is rooted in intimacy and inner experience. Attending Mass should be about seeking a personal meeting with Him, not just fulfilling the obligation of going to the Eucharist. We may never fully grasp the strength the Eucharist brings to our lives. The act of eating His body and drinking His blood represents the deepest form of spiritual connection.

3. Eternally. Through Jesus, we find eternal life. While we all have limits, in God, we discover that anything is possible. The ongoing struggle for both you and me is to remember that we belong to Him, and our journey leads us toward Him. Always keep searching for the “Bread of Angels,” which gives us everlasting life.

Don’t forget something good is on the way.

God bless you and guard you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
