Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9, 1-6
Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority
over all demons and to cure diseases,
and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God
and to heal the sick.
He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey,
neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money,
and let no one take a second tunic.
Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And as for those who do not welcome you,
when you leave that town,
shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”
Then they set out and went from village to village
proclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.
Healing
1. He summoned. The key is not to isolate yourself. It’s about talking to someone about what you’re going through, allowing others to help you, and above all, accepting that you’ll always need someone in this life. Don’t fall into the arrogance of thinking you can solve everything on your own. Some things you can handle, and some things you can’t. I’d like to share something that happened to me recently. Someone came up to me and said, “Let other people help you.” That stayed with me because it was true. I realized I tend to want to solve everything myself, and I struggle to delegate. Jesus doesn’t just delegate; He also empowers His disciples.
2. He sent them out. This is the mission of the Church: to be sent out to relieve and heal, not to control or condemn. We Catholics, especially priests and nuns, have a reputation for imposing rather than relieving, blaming rather than comforting, and condemning rather than encouraging. But that couldn’t be further from what Jesus intended. You and I are called to encourage and lift others up, to comfort and accompany them, to relieve and guide. We’re called to be bridges, not walls, in other people’s journey toward God.
3. Remain. To remain in God is to make time for prayer and seek that gentle, ongoing conversation with Him. If your relationship with God isn’t strong, it’ll be very hard for your actions to truly remain rooted in Him. Remember, what motivates you to keep going each day is your perseverance in God, your abiding in Him—not the results you receive from Him. Always remember that something good is on the way!
God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
