John 20, 1–9

by Fr. Michael Della Penna
John 20, 1-9

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 20, 1-9

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in  today

He is risen!

  1. Behold I am making all things new.    The meaning and significance of this phrase  , which comes from revelation sums up the profound mystery of the amazing good news we proclaim today that He is risen ! Everything has changed because Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus rose from the dead on the day after the Sabbath a day on which the Jews referred to as the first day of the week . We remember on the first day of the week God began creation. Jesus, through his resurrection, begins creation a new.  He Is the first born of the dead  , and opens a new reality, a new possibility for each of us.

  2. In the incarnation we could say that all of Gods divine life was concentrated in one part of creation and enclosed inside the Immaculate womb of Mary.  The Word took on flesh and was born on Christmas . On Easter however the opposite is true . Gods divine life bursts forth from its limitations and is diffused throughout all of creation, as His spirit fills the universe and offers us the opportunity to become His body .
  3. Mary Magdalene of course is the greatest witness and symbol of the resurrection because she more than anybody else shows how we are invited to die to our old life and begin a new life .  Since God has broken through all limitations and opened a new realm beyond death we now have the possibility of a new existence unimaginable before . Today my brothers and sisters open up your heart so that Jesus’ Easter Grace can fill and transform you so that you can die to your old life and begin a new life, becoming a new creation, a new creature . Everything is made new. Alleluia Alleluia Happy Easter !

May God bless you in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit
