John 10,1-10

John 10, 1-10

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 10,1-10

Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.
But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.
But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.”
Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.
All who came (before me) are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

Peace to all my brothers and sisters listening in today

1) Listening to hear- Many years ago, a young man applied for a job as a Morse Code operator. When he arrived for the interview, he walked into a large, busy office filled with noise and chatter, including the sound of a telegraph in the background. Each applicant had filled out a form and were seated until they were summoned into the head office. There were already many other applicants sitting in the room waiting. After only a few minutes, however, the young man stood up, dashed across the room and walked right into the head office. Naturally the other applicants were surprised and wondered what was going on. They muttered among themselves that they hadn’t heard anyone calling anyone to come in. They assumed the young man had made a mistake and would be disqualified. Within a few minutes, however, the smiling employer escorted the young man out of the office and said to the other applicants, “Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming, but the job has just been filled.” The other applicants were indignant and began grumbling to each other, and one spoke up saying, “Wait a minute, I don’t understand. He was the last to come in, and we have been waiting for hours and never even got a chance to be interviewed. Yet he got the job. That’s not fair!” The employer said, “I’m sorry, but while you’ve been sitting here the whole time, the telegraph has been ticking out the following message in Morse Code: ‘If you can understand this message, then come right in. The job is yours.’ None of you listened to hear it. This young man did. He gets the reward- the job is his.”

2) Vying voices- In this complex world there are not only many vying voices and much noisy chatter to contend with, there is also an overwhelming amount of information and misinformation to sift through. There are so many opinions and beliefs that it can be extremely difficult to know who or what to listen to.

3) A loving voice- Thankfully, God made it simple. At Jesus’ transfiguration while He was on the mountain, God the Father said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5). Jesus truly is God’s Son and the Savior of this world. With so much background noise, it’s no wonder many do not hear his gentle loving voice or recognize His peaceful words of truth, which are easily drowned out. We have to listen for them. Jesus has the words of eternal life (John 6:68) from which we will be judged by in the end (John 12:48). This Sunday’s Gospel reminds us that the sheep follow because they recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd. In a world filled with confusing information, let’s keep focused on the His words of life.
Today let us try to listen and recognize His voice. We will know its His voice when we hear anything spoken about love, forgiveness, hope, truth, goodness or peace.
May God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
