Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 21,1-4
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”
To truly give
1) Raising his eyes: Jesus observes and knows how to read the hearts and attitudes of others. You have to learn to lift up your eyes. Look at others; please, stop looking only at yourself all the time. Focusing in on yourself so much will drive you crazy ! You might start believing that you are the only one who suffers, that you are a victim, that only you fall into such a sin, etc. Look up and learn to see others: see their struggles, their ailments, their downfalls and their successes. Learn to look at people’s hearts. Realize that yours is one more in this world, and that there are others who fight harder and struggle more than you do. There are people who have already won that battle in which you find yourself today. Don’t stop looking at others, because it is how you learn to discover in the other’s life, that which strengthens your own life.
2) The surplus: Maybe you are so involved in your own thing that you forget that you have a life. Is everything in my life business? Is everything I do just to show off in front of others ? Do you care a lot about being seen and taken into account? That desire for success can become your poverty. The most valuable thing you have is time; time can never be recuperated; time is what you spend, so don’t waste it. Remember that God is the God of Kairos, the God of time. Cherish the time you have been given, and stop comparing yourself to others, that is a waste of precious time.
3) The widow: In her, we see one who gives everything. You have to give your all to your vocation; to that “life option” that you have chosen: your family; your parish; whatever you have placed your bet on to be happy in this life. Do not give your life only what is left over from your hobby, your job, or your business. Give of your precious time to your life. Ask yourself: Do you have time to play sports? Do you have time to eat calmly? Do you have time to relax and enjoy a good movie, listen to music, or go to a concert ? Even if it’s just once a month, do you make time to spend with your friends? Give what you have of your valuable time to your life … not only what is left over .
God bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal !
