Matthew 21, 23 – 27

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

When Jesus had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?”
Jesus said to them in reply, “I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things.
Where was John’s baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?” They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’
But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.”
So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” He himself said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

There is always a stumbling block

1) He entered the temple: How important it is to have a life of prayer. I want to insist in this because I think that your moments of prayer are very important. The moment you enter to the temple to be alone with Jesus, even though it’s just for a short moment, does a lot of good in your heart. I know it is difficult to do it during this time of the year because we are so busy, but at least for a short moment, go into the temple; visit Jesús… say “hello” to Him, or just stay there in silence with out saying a word… you’ll see how God’s love will penetrate your heart …doing so much good in you.

2) Authority: Jesus teaches with coherence and experience; two things we have to work on. Even though it is hard for one to act with coherence, we have to insist on it, because it is there where our word takes effect. If you have children, you will understand me. It is possible that you say millions of things to your children, but what they see you do (your behavior), is what they learn for a lifetime. Imagine me, being a priest, I have many spiritual and faith children. I must always work and live in coherence.

3) Cunning: Jesus is an expert in this… He knows how to handle the situation. We must also be wise, especially now days, that just by being a Christian, a catechist, or a consecrated person, you become a target for others to attack you . They attack with their comments, jokes, and bad attitudes towards you. It’s important for you not to loose your temper; be smart; learn to listen and learn to be quiet. Once, I got together with my soccer friends, and they began to bother me… questioning my affairs of the Church, and even making jokes. At some point the conversation continued, and I slowly and calmly started to answer certain questions with logic and foundations. To other questions I laughed and I also made jokes, and in others I kept silent, because I knew it wasn’t worth it to answer back to them. In the end, we were all happy … Therefore, do not grumble or get angry right away; it doesn’t get you anywhere! Learn how to be clever.
God bless you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Remember, heaven is our goal !
