Mark 8, 14-21

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 8,14-21

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
He enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.
When he became aware of this he said to them, “Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?
Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,
when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.”
When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up? They answered (him), “Seven.”
He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Grace above bureaucracy

1)Pharisees: Jesus tells us to be careful not to fall into religious pharisaism, where we live within a structure built for God, but without God. Please do not let this happen to you because you will be lying to yourself. Remember that the Church is the hospital for the soul where those who are hurt and suffering go. Today many of us only have one bread to offer, the bread of faith. I often see people that will teach catechism because where they live there is no one who can teach about Jesus, men and women who teach about Jesus however they can because there is not a priest or a nun to help them. God multiplies these actions just like bread. But please (this is for those of us who are working within the church) do not give hardened bread. Let us not harden that fresh bread that is given by our brothers with all their heart and which we can harden with bureaucracy. Help us spread and satiate with the Bread that gives life. The Bread that is for everyone, people who have teeth and those who don´t, those who are dirty and those who are clean, those who are young and those who are wrinkled like a raisin. For everyone… God comes to give himself for all who have always sinned and those who have not sinned, though this is very difficult. For everyone . . .

2) Distrust: this is something that is hard for everyone. It is hard to trust your husband or wife, your children, the Church, and priests. It is hard because we have seen things that have hurt us, but we have forgotten so many great things that have been accomplished. Please trust again, but first trust yourself. Trust yourself and trust God as this will allow you to trust others. You cannot give what you do not have. Building that trust is a process that is not accomplished overnight. We cannot be naïve as this is accomplished little by little. Trusting yourself will lead you to trust others and knowing you are in God´s hands, you will achieve the peace you are seeking.

3) What is logical: if you look closely at everything that God has been doing in your life, you will understand that you have been in God´s hands and that you must learn that God will be with you always. Do not let anyone erase the beautiful things that you have lived because surely in your life there is something beautiful. Come on! You must continue moving forward because the hardships and pains are overcome with your achievements and remembering that you and God will continue achieving in the future. Together with God, you have relentless power. Please believe.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Heaven is our goal!
