John 21, 20-25

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 21, 20-25

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?’ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!’ So the rumour spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, ‘If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?’

This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Witnessing.

1) What he said: I think it is worth looking at an important detail that was already happening in the time of Jesus: the problem of the “broken telephone”… that confusion when messages are misinterpreted. We see that in the time of Jesus it was already there… even among the apostles. Today this evil may still be going around among us; “putting words in other people’s mouths”. We mistakenly make God “say” things that He did not say; many of us do it, even the Pope falls into the trap of the “broken telephone” . This can produce great divisions in the Church and even weaken it.

2) The witness: On the other hand we see in the figure of John a burning witness. He looks for every way to express the life of Jesus so that He is known and believed. I think that if John were here today, he would use social media, and every means possible, to teach about Jesus.

3) Show Jesus: You and I, as true witnesses, should look for ways to show and teach about Him; in a simple but profound way, without forcing it… but making an impact. May the Holy Spirit give us the grace to witness in unity, and may we be able to fix the broken phones in our parishes and movements. Let us live in truth as Christians, demonstrating our joy with a smile.
May God protect you and bless you in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Never forget heaven is our goal!
