Matthew 7, 7-12

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 7, 7-12

‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! ‘In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

This Lenten season is marked by prayer and by a change of heart; this leads to changes in attitudes

1) Prayer of petition. Our incessant prayer proves we are always in need of God. God is constantly showing us, like the perfect father that He is, how He takes care of all his offspring. As a son or daughter, you must also tell Him your needs. Show him what you need in order to reach him.

2) Change. I’d like to point out some differences within this idea.
a- Weakness. We have to recognize our weaknesses and strive to overcome them. With God’s help and our honesty, we can work day by day to change and conquer them. I can either win or lose the fight to overcome my weaknesses.
b- Evil. It is something we consciously seek and adhere to; being evil is choosing to harm others and it is something that comes from within us. We take pleasure in the misfortune of others and try to destroy the peace of others. This is totally the opposite of what the Gospel asks of you today.

Overcoming your weakness will lead you to develop great strength. But, if you choose evil, you will suffer sadness and bitterness. Strive to change and pray for that!
God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Remember that Heaven is our goal!
