John 20, 1-9

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus according to John 20, 1-9

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

Christ lives!

1) Light. In the Easter Vigil, the Church is in darkness as a sign of our darkness in life- When everything is dark, we feel insecure and afraid, we feel alone and cold. How many times we go through darkness in life because we do not see things clearly and because we feel lost. Darkness keeps us from seeing the way. Light comes from God to give us life and to illuminate us. Life and light are two sides of the same coin. You can give light to many people, but for that, you must have it.

2) Testimony. Mary of Magdala runs to tell the disciples what she has seen; there is something in her heart that moves her and leads her to announce. Today we need missionaries, Christians who go out and announce. It is a sign of what we, Christians, do in the world, announcing, taking light to others. In each Eucharist we receive the strength to take light to others.  We are not called to solve the lives of others but to shed light on the lives of others.

3) Joy. If you transmit joy it is because you have peace and clearly, if you have peace, you are joyful. This is what we are called upon to be: positive people who transmit hope because nothing stops a Christian, not even death. Today, you have life, show it through your attitudes, your gestures and your expression.

Happy Easter, may the strength of the Risen Christ lead you to continue striving for your happiness.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Always remember that  Heaven is our goal.
