John 3, 7b-15

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 3, 7b-15

Jesus said to Nicodemus:
“‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes,
but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes;
so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus answered and said to him,
‘How can this happen?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this?
Amen, amen, I say to you,
we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen,
but you people do not accept our testimony.
If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe,
how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

Born of the Spirit.

1) Being reborn.  Jesus reminds us today that being reborn implies coming back to freedom and remembering that God frees us from all the structures we have built up and that have tied us down.  This is a curious aspect of humans, we build structures and at the beginning everything goes well, but later on this structure asphyxiates us because we are unable to abandon it, or we become dependent on it. We often live to comply, and we do not live a plentiful life. In the religious aspect, this also happens to us.

2) Testimony. God invites us to take a serious look at our lives and decide to live bearing in mind that God is always participating in our lives. Do not give up on the fight and look at what God is doing in your life. There is a story behind you that explains who you are today.

3) Eternal life. Remember to look up to heaven. Your objective is to be happy, and you have a higher goal to look forward to: reaching heaven. Heaven, where there are no structures, no suffocation, where there is plentiful life.

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And don’t forget that Heaven is our goal!
