Mark 3, 31-35

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 3, 31-35

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

Doing God’s will leads you to Jesus

1- Family. You may surely be wondering what his relatives were doing, going out to look for him. You may have certain familiarity with Jesus, but anyhow, you should go back to him, you shouldn’t stop going out to look for him.  In spite of being a priest, I still have faith and life crises, I still have doubts. Of course, I do!  That’s why having a relationship with Jesus doesn’t mean you should stop looking for him.

2- His look.  Jesus’ look, his gaze, appears many times in the Gospels. This clearly shows us that He’s paying close attention to our lives. His look implies attention, depth, intensity, presence. Today Jesus is looking at you. He wants to engage you; He wants to be part of your life so that you might be part of his.

3- “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother”. This is a compliment to his mother, his family, and the apostles because they followed Jesus.  You, too, should follow him and not worry about others. Everything will become clear in due time. You’re not alone, we’re a family, we’re a Church family. We’re brothers and sisters and should always help one another.

Remember that something good is on the way!  God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
