Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 12, 46-50
While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
The bonds of God’s will
- His mother and brothers. Many times, your family can cause pain and that produces certain distance. The fact is that in our family we show ourselves as we are and none of us who are part of it can lie to one another. There is no book that says what families should be like. The family is dynamic, and it changes because each member changes and situations affect everyone, and new members appear that also change the family. Maybe you know your brother or sister well, but after they get married they change! Then, ask yourself if you know where you stand with your family today and if you are accepting it as it is now. Maybe you are living with longings or illusions that will never be fulfilled. If you don’t accept where you come from and what your family is like, you will never be able to walk calmly along the path of life.
- Who are they? We are family in the Church, with the good things and the problems of all families. But we must understand that familiarity with Jesus goes beyond ‘family’ ties. Saying we believe in him is not enough. Living a Christian life is not just for the pats on the back and photo opportunities of us being kind and loving. Christianity must be lived 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must never forget that institutional ties aren’t the most important thing to remain part of the Christian community, but rather fulfilling the Father’s will.
- His will. In this life we are called to do God’s will and to discover that his will is best for our lives. You must be aware of what you are here on earth for. Don’t waste your time. You have a beautiful life, in spite of the bad things that have happened or happen to you. They serve to help others to move forward. Don’t get entangled with things or people that don’t lead you to anything good. Be generous with your life. Look ahead knowing that you’re helping others to grow and fulfil God’s will as well.
Never forget that something good is on the way!
God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
