Matthew 13, 18-23

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 13, 18-23

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Hear the parable of the sower.
The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom
without understanding it,
and the Evil One comes and steals away
what was sown in his heart.
The seed sown on rocky ground
is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
he immediately falls away.
The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
and it bears no fruit.
But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

Going out to sow

1. Without understanding. When you let yourself get carried away by the opinions of others, when you don’t take charge of yourself and you’re always waiting for others to solve things for you, your life gets out of hand. It’s as if you tried to tie yourself to someone because you can’t do anything by yourself, or because you need to feel the security of having someone to attach yourself to. That is no longer life or at least it is no longer your life.

2. Fickle. When you start to be driven only by feelings, and not by the firmness of your convictions, everything starts to weaken, because there are no roots. If there’s something I’ve learned during this time it’s that there are times when we need to put aside our feelings and passions, to assume the convictions of what is good for our life. Many times, I left aside my convictions to feed a passion or a feeling; I even confused love with a transitory emotion and devotion with passion. And that backfired. But I learned to listen and that helped me to get my life back on track, towards the goal I want. Today I invite you to look hard at your life and see where you are going, see if there is a solid foundation in what you’re doing, see what is permanent and who is with you. Make sure you are not wandering through life.

3. Listen and understand. For your life to be fertile you must learn to listen. It’s necessary to understand that everything that has happened to you in life has a reason and a purpose. Even what hurt you and made you suffer allows you to be stronger today. After a time of crisis, I was able to understand that life is short and that what makes you great is to give yourself entirely to others without expecting anything from them. Show yourself the way you are and not the way others want you to be. Today, bear fruit from your listening. Surrender to God and give yourself from what you’ve understood, from what you are and from what God wants from you.

Don’t forget that something good is on the way!

God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
