Luke 6, 39-42

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 6, 39-42

Jesus told his disciples a parable:
“Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite!  Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

First remove the wooden beam from your eye

1. Guide. There are times when we look at others more than we look at ourselves; we even meddle in other people’s lives. First look at yourself, discover yourself and understand your own path, and once you’ve achieved that, you can help illuminate the lives of others. This is God’s proposal to you: discover your own path and don’t go about suffocating the lives of others. Everyone goes through their own process in a different way, and they walk along the path to happiness at their own pace and in their unique way.

2. Disciple. Jesus shows you his way and his struggle. And you have your own path and your own struggle to be able to improve yourself day by day. Sure, it’s difficult to challenge yourself and to strive to better yourself, but you must be aware that you’re growing every day; it’s like your daily training. So far this year, what have you managed to change, to overcome? Think about that.

3. Remove. To help someone else first you need to have an attitude of change. It’s very easy to look at others, but how difficult it is to look at oneself! At a time when I was going through a very difficult crisis, a very close friend suggested that I listen to the audio reflections I had recorded (I’d never read or listened to them because it made me feel embarrassed), but in two audios I found an answer to the situation that was tormenting me. Today I propose that you look at yourself and listen and reflect on yourself. You might find a solution to the problem you’re going through.

Never forget that something good is on the way!
