Mark 1, 14-20

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1, 14-20

After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment.
The Kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea;
they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Then they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther
and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They too were in a boat mending their nets.
Then he called them.
So they left their father Zebedee in the boat
along with the hired men and followed him.

Ordinary time begins

1. Arrested. When you experience difficult situations, you can have an attitude of lamentation and victimization or an attitude of action. This is Jesus’ attitude: He goes out and does what He is supposed to do, He doesn’t remain in the role of John’s savior.  He assumes the role and mission that God the Father has given Him. Today I propose that you consider your mission.  Is your life revolving around someone close to you, who seems to be imprisoned somehow, and you think you are that person’s savior? Or perhaps you still haven’t realized what your mission is and who you are here for. There are things you can’t just sit around regretting, go out and take action for your life.

2. Repent and believe. When you believe you change and when you change you believe. That’s life and that’s what you’re in life for. This year think about what you have to change in yourself. We all have our personal struggles, and the important thing is that you see where you stand in life and where you want to direct your life. You have a lot to do and a lot to change, because bad habits will always appear.

3. They followed him. Following Jesus is a decision, but it implies that you must give up certain comforts. I’m not only referring to priests or nuns, but to everyone. You must realize that you yourself are tied to things or people; the key is to let go to find God, and in God, the freedom of your life. Seek the One who’s calling you and call the One who’s seeking you, because He is always there.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
