Mark 1, 29-39

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano
1501 Mark 1, 29-39-fb

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1, 29-39

On leaving the synagogue
Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset,
they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases,
and he drove out many demons,
not permitting them to speak because they knew him.

Rising very early before dawn,
he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him
and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come.”
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons
throughout the whole of Galilee.

Heal, preach and relieve

1. Heal. Peter’s mother-in-law was not well. She had an illness that probably caused symptoms such as a high temperature, imaginary perceptions, and discomfort. You might also feel sick like that, letting yourself be carried away by your imagination and making a world out of situations that are not real or not really serious. You may feel that life weighs you down, you feel weak and tired of life, as if you no longer wanted to face it. Ask Jesus to heal you.

2. Preach. Jesus’s preaching goes hand in hand with prayer. How important prayer is for those who preach, who announce. That means talking to God in order to talk about God. You must pray to preach and preach to pray; you can’t do one without the other. So, come on! Christ needs you, because you are called to relieve and preach.

3. Relieve. You and I are other Christs in this world. We must relieve the pain of those who are wounded and burdened, of people who have lost hope. We must show them a close, merciful God, who embraces them and loves them. Today you are Christ, Christ himself. Today you are the closest thing your brother or sister has to Jesus. Announce!

Don’t forget that something good is on the way!

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
