Mark 2, 23-28

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 2, 23-28

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him,
“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them,
“Have you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them,
“The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Need

1. Heads of grain. When the need of a person is driven away by norms or ritualism, that’s when we become insensitive religious people. We have lost sensitivity and even ignore what’s happening to others. We don’t see the need or the suffering of others, not because it’s not there, but because we don’t want to see it. You can say that there are people who abuse your willingness or your generosity, but don’t close your heart to the suffering and the needs of other people.

2. Shared with his companions. We are often criticized for being a Church that preaches mercy, but that’s often insensitive to the suffering of people. There are times that the fulfillment of norms defines if you are a good Christian or not, more than the attitude of service and dedication to your brothers and sisters. I’ve even seen in brother priests the need to talk about their troubles and pains, but for fear of what people will say, they keep it to themselves and don’t talk about it. That also happens to people who are well known in the Christian sphere or people who are irreproachable, but for fear of being labeled or of being expelled from the Church, they don’t talk about it, they suffer in silence and live hungry for peace. The fear of not fulfilling rites, or that the blemishes may be noticed, many times weighs more than speaking out and letting yourself be satiated by others in order to be able to live in peace. And this happens in the Church, in your life or in your family.

3. The Lord. Remember that God came to show us that we have something divine in us and that we can grow to achieve holiness. Don’t let the gaze and comments of others keep you away from the peace that God can give you. Today, be encouraged to seek your peace and don’t worry about what others say about you; be satiated by God.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
