Mark 6, 34-44

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 6, 34-44

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them,
for they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said,
“This is a deserted place and it is already very late.
Dismiss them so that they can go
to the surrounding farms and villages
and buy themselves something to eat.”
He said to them in reply,
“Give them some food yourselves.”
But they said to him,
“Are we to buy two hundred days’ wages worth of food
and give it to them to eat?”
He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?  Go and see.”
And when they had found out they said,
“Five loaves and two fish.”
So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.
The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples
to set before the people;
he also divided the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied.
And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragments
and what was left of the fish.
Those who ate of the loaves were five thousand men.

Give them some food yourselves

1. Saw. I think you need to see the reality of your life. You must pause a little bit and look at the whole of your life. Look at your family, your friends and your life story. Try to see what they really need from you and how you can contribute to the lives of others. Sometimes we don’t have the ability to see, to perceive situations, and that leads us not to sympathize with people. We don’t put ourselves in other people’s shoes either because we don’t perceive their situation, or we don’t want to see it and then we go on with our “automatic life” without realizing that there is someone who needs us.

2. Dismiss them. Perhaps you may behave like the apostles, having good intentions on the surface but always looking out for your own convenience without caring about what happens to others. That’s something that continues to happen today;  many of us who are in the Church fall into a state of mere compliance, without thinking what may happen to others in their life.  We behave as if we thought people should come, attend mass, give alms and say goodbye, and if they fall in their everyday path, they should manage on their own. No! Those brothers and sisters need you and me.

3. The Eucharist. It’s the food that satiates your life, it’s what truly nourishes you. You and I, as followers of Jesus, have the mission of bringing those who’re struggling in life to the encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist. Fill your soul of God to be able to walk forward; go to mass. Leave aside whether you like the priest or not, the Eucharist is much deeper. Come see Jesus and eat Jesus because that’s what will give you the strength to walk along the path of life.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
