John 6, 1-15

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6, 1-15

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee.
A large crowd followed him,
because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.
Jesus went up on the mountain,
and there he sat down with his disciples.
The Jewish feast of Passover was near.
When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him,
he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?”
He said this to test him,
because he himself knew what he was going to do.
Philip answered him,
“Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough
for each of them to have a little.”
One of his disciples,
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish;
but what good are these for so many?”
Jesus said, “Have the people recline.”
Now there was a great deal of grass in that place.
So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks,
and distributed them to those who were reclining,
and also as much of the fish as they wanted.
When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples,
“Gather the fragments left over,
so that nothing will be wasted.”
So they collected them,
and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments
from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.
When the people saw the sign he had done, they said,
“This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.”
Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off
to make him king,
he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

Five loaves and two fish

1. Went across. You can’t remain locked up in your life and you can’t walk along on your own. You need to look at others, share with others and listen to others. Jesus didn’t live in a bubble. Don’t live your life in a closed world but rather go out into the world and cross over to get to know other people’s worlds and understand what they have to give and share with you. This will also help you not to believe that you’re the only one who has problems, and it will also help you not to fall into feeling victimized, as if everyone were against you.

2. To test him. Different situations in life make you realize that you will always go through trials and that there are always obstacles to overcome. It’s important to discover that your life has a direction and a path, but that every journey has tests that you must pass. Tests are to grow and learn, even if they make you cry. It’s necessary to think about what you have learned in your life so far.

3. Feed them. People are in great need, there’s hunger, physical and spiritual hunger. Their needs always surpass our solutions. That is why it’s important that you learn that even if everything you do seems small, it’s great when you do it with confidence. Faith makes your ‘little’ become ‘a lot’. A small contribution can be the start of a great miracle. And don’t ever discredit anyone, because you might receive help from the person you least expected.  Don’t give up your commitment and learn to give yourself to others every day.

Always remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
