Matthew 25, 14- 30

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 25, 14- 30

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
“A man going on a journey
called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one–
to each according to his ability.
Then he went away.
Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them,
and made another five.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground
and buried his master’s money.
After a long time
the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.
The one who had received five talents
came forward bringing the additional five.
He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents.
See, I have made five more.’
His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master’s joy.’
Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said,
‘Master, you gave me two talents.
See, I have made two more.’
His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master’s joy.’
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said,
‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person,
harvesting where you did not plant
and gathering where you did not scatter;
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground.
Here it is back.’
His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant!
So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant
and gather where I did not scatter?
Should you not then have put my money in the bank
so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
For to everyone who has,
more will be given and he will grow rich;
but from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'”

The talents of your life

1. He entrusted them. In this life, it’s crucial to understand that life itself has been entrusted to you, and sooner or later, God will ask for it back. It’s important to remember that you will be held accountable for your life. Don’t think or believe that you control everything. As I always say and it might sound a bit harsh: “All it takes is to fall ill or end up in the ICU to realize you can’t control everything yourself”.

2. Talents. It’s time you realized that if you keep making excuses for everything in life, waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect person, or for everything to be just right before taking a step, you might lose everything. The famous “someday” might never arrive, which is why today is your day. Stop looking for “someday” and start talking about “today.” Stop postponing things; don’t keep delaying matters that should already be done or decided in your life. Don’t keep living in a neutral way, without passion, emotion, or focus on what you do. Trust and take risks, because faith and trust can achieve and change everything.

3. Administer. Check how you’re managing your life—what you’re doing with your time and your gifts. You must understand that we’re all different, and you have gifts that others don’t. Also consider that life is a risk: it’s about putting yourself out on the line for those you love, for your children, or for your family, it’s about taking risks to achieve something. What you do always carries a risk, but the beautiful part is also understanding that God loves to give to those who give. If you give in this life, God will never leave you with nothing. Many people don’t truly want to serve God; rather, they want to be seen serving. So, give selflessly, because to love is to give everything and ask for nothing.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
