Luke 9, 43b- 45

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9, 43b- 45

While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Don’t Lose Your Head

1. People admired Jesus. In life, a lot of people are going to admire you and shower you with compliments. They’ll tell you that you’re wonderful, good, and beautiful. Please, don’t believe it. It’s going to cause you problems sooner or later, or maybe it already has. You have to be careful, because those who love you might not realize how much their admiration can affect you or poison you. Don’t misunderstand me, but I personally try to be careful not to get a big head. Pride is always lurking; it sticks fast and is very hard to get rid of. When people praise you, don’t say a thing. Be encouraging, but don’t let their words get to you. Instead, do things for God, not for praise.

2. Remember. Jesus constantly reminded people of the path He was on. It’s crucial for you to do the same so you don’t get poisoned by vanity. Remember where your life is heading, keep your feet on the ground, and know where you came from. Never stray from this. You have to remember who you are, what your weaknesses are, your history, your journey, and your life’s purpose. You need to stay grounded and remember your roots so you don’t get carried away by compliments that can go to your head. And let’s be honest, there’s nothing more disagreeable than talking to an arrogant person who constantly brings up their resume and makes sure all the spotlights are on them. Please be careful, because you could fall into that trap too.

3. Strategies. To avoid this, cultivate humility. Try to be discreet whenever you can, and don’t tell everyone what you’re doing; let them discover it on their own. I’ll share a prayer that I pray every day; maybe it can help you too.

Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed,

Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being loved…

From the desire of being extolled …

From the desire of being honored …

From the desire of being praised …

From the desire of being preferred to others…

From the desire of being consulted …

From the desire of being approved …

From the fear of being humiliated …

From the fear of being despised…

From the fear of suffering rebukes …

From the fear of being calumniated …

From the fear of being forgotten …

From the fear of being ridiculed …

From the fear of being wronged …

From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,

Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I …

That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you, be with you and protect you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
