John 16, 29-33

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano
In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 16, 29-33

The disciples said to Jesus,
“Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.
Now we realize that you know everything
and that you do not need to have anyone question you.
Because of this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived
when each of you will be scattered to his own home
and you will leave me alone.
But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

Now you are talking plainly

1. No figures of speech. We should always strive to be straightforward in both our words and our actions. There’s a constant temptation to act just to look good to others or to please them, or to avoid telling the truth because we’re afraid of upsetting someone. But when you’re clear and honest, you show transparency and reveal your true values without hesitation. The key is to be honest with yourself and with those around you, and to know when to say “yes” and when to say “no”.

2. No one knows everything. The reality is, nobody ever knows everything. In our current culture of strong opinions, it’s a good reminder that no one is an expert on everything. It’s wise to be thoughtful and careful about what you say. Some people will often give their opinions about your life, even without being asked, and their words sometimes sting and hurt. Remember, others only ever see a part of who you are; only God knows you completely.

3. With me. There’s comfort in knowing that God is present in your life and will never abandon you. This truth brings motivation and strength, especially during times when others may leave you or when you experience failure. I once received a small sign from a monk friend for my lectern that read, “God is with me.” Let this encourage you: even if people turn their backs on you, God never will.

Never forget that something good is on the way!

May God bless you and protect you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
