Matthew 19,16-22

Matthew 19 16-22

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 19,16-22

A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?”
He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, ” ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother’; and ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'”
The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Seek eternal life

1) The first question is What do I have to do? Jesus shows us that our actions show who we really are. This is why our attitudes are the product of our principles and our way of life. It is like this phrase that says: “Show me how you live, and I will tell you how you think.” We don’t reach happiness only because of how we act. There are times when we even reduce religion to a moralistic product or just rules and actions. It is as if the priest has a manual to consult to find how he should respond when you have acted badly in this or that; as if the priest looks at the guide for bad actions and gives the corresponding penance: No! Christianity does not work like this because it is not reduced to actions, but rather to a way of living, a life of conviction. We want to be like Christ on earth, and we should put all our effort to act as Jesus would now.

2) Sell: Jesus invites you to come out of your comfort zone and learn to trust Him, because our wealth is where we feel safe. Abandon yourself in His hands; remembering that not everything depends on you and that you cannot have everything. Life is constantly full decisions to be made; it is all about knowing how to abandon yourself in His hands. This rich young man had great wealth (he was conceited); relying on his own strength and his personal achievements. Do you show yourself to others as the boss of the bosses? The one that does everything well? Do you claim to be like King Midas (Greek mythology) where everything he touched turned into gold? No. It is not always like that… and this young man goes away sad.

3) Sad: this young man is sad because he does not want to let go. You and I can also become sad when things escape our hands; when everything is overwhelming. Look for the joy and trust in God. If everything depends on you, and if you think everything revolves around you, it is certain that you will end up sad. Today I propose that you keep smiling, be happy and positive towards others. Let’s do it, just for today.

God bless you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
