Matthew 6,1-6.16-18

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 6,1-6.16-18

Jesus said to his disciples: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return

1)Look inside yourself: today´s gospel starts with this thought, that you not show off everything you do. Don’t show the whole world the things you say and do. Stop taking selfies or photos when you are saying hi to someone. Stop paying so much attention to the number of likes. Maintain a low profile and set the selfies aside. Make a change! I understand that we love social media and even I find it difficult but it is good to make a change and disappear a bit. Today you are invited to use these forty days of Lent to observe and examine yourself. It is time to make a change, the party is over. It is time to get serious and determined about the actions in your life. Life is beautiful and festive but it also needs to be taken seriously. Today, I invite you to examine a “spiritual” selfie. It is like a selfie that you would publish in social media, but instead of a picture taken and published by you, the spiritual selfie is when you examine yourself and publish the image for God to see. Will he give it a “Like” or leave comments? It is time to disappear, time to calm down a bit, a time for inner reflection, in silence, in your interior. Observe yourself, listen more and examine more.

2)Alms, fasting and prayer: these are the 3 pillars of Lent. It is time to do penance, fasting to feel the need for God and not just to reduce measurements. It is time to provide others with your time, feel the need and give yourself to others. See if you can lend a hand to the person who is next to you. It is time to pray and talk to God more often about your things. Tell him everything that happened to you this year, everything you have lived this past year and this year, talk more, find yourself with God more often.

3) Last objective: Mary. Today, approach Mary and ask her to help you live this Lent in the best way possible. Maybe you are not a fan of the rosary because it is hard for you to pray, you find it boring, you don’t understand it, but I ask that you at least find an image of the Virgin, the one you like most, and ask Her to take care of your heart and help you to change. She is our Mother and knows what we need. Your mother knows. The Virgin knows what you have to change. She asks God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to grant you grace. Do not forget to go to church today for the imposition of ashes. Begin a new stage in your life. Get cleaned! And begin, Lent is here.

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Heaven is our goal!
