Mark 1, 21-28

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Mark 1, 21-28

Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers,
and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet!  Come out of him!”
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
 “What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

An unclean spirit

1. It shouts. Instead of speaking, it resorts to shouting. This is a reaction seen in people who lack inner purity and peace—they try to force their opinions on others, and they aren’t open to genuine conversation, sometimes even fearing it. Such individuals are closed off, not communicating from the depths of their soul but from the hectic rush of their lives. Shouting becomes a way to impose, dominate, and cause harm. Today, resist the “impurity” that tempts you to insist on your own way and instead, strive to listen to others.

2. It trembles. Another sign is that it shakes, leaving no room to stay steady. A person who drifts away from God’s presence becomes dispersed, losing consistency and “trembling” with every choice they face. They struggle to confront challenges directly, becoming mentally and emotionally unsettled. They search for answers everywhere but never find true confidence.

3. A loud cry. These are the cries born from memories and imagination, thoughts that echo in your mind and stir up guilt. In those moments when your mind won’t quieten and only noise remains, there is no peace. Today, Jesus offers to free you, to fill you with the peace that only He can provide. He alone can cleanse you of these impurities. Open your heart to Him.

Remember that something good is on the way!

God bless you and be with you in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
