John 16, 5-11

by Fr. Luis A. Zazano

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 16, 5-11

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Now I am going to the one who sent me,
and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go.
For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.
But if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes he will convict the world
in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:
sin, because they do not believe in me;
righteousness, because I am going to the Father
and you will no longer see me;
condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

It is better that I go

1. I am going. There are times when we need to step back from certain people or situations—not because they harm us, but because being constantly involved isn’t healthy. Too much closeness can lead to obsession. This is what separates mature relationships from immature ones: immature bonds foster dependence, while mature relationships encourage freedom.

2. Grief. Sadness is part of growing up. Letting go is a necessary step, and feeling the pain of loss is part of the process. However, it’s not about remaining stuck in sorrow over what you’ve let go; it’s about recognizing that you have to lose something to gain something. Life often requires us to let go of something in order to receive something new. The most important thing is to understand that sadness is only temporary.

3. Sin. Not believing is a way of avoiding responsibility. When you focus too much on yourself, you become too self-centered and you can lose what matters most—your relationship with God. Strive to see your life connected to God and let that connection guide how you relate to others. The main sin we all deal with is pride. As St. Josemaría Escrivá said, “Pride is the sin that dies two days after you’re buried.”

Remember that something good is on the way!
